Does Your Subject Agree With Your Verb?

I was reading a blog post the other day.  As I glanced through the comments, the author stated that she is good at making sure of subject/verb agreement.

I have to admit that I am not good at this.  In fact, I don’t even think about it.  However, that comment got me to thinking about the stories that we are living and that many of us are telling.

Are our subjects agreeing with our verbs.

Not in our grammar.  Not in our speech.  Not in our blog posts or eBooks or anything else we are writing.

I’m talking about our lives.

What I mean is if who we say we are, our SUBJECT, agrees with what we do, our VERB.

Another way of saying it is are we living our values.

Does what we say we believe match up with how we’re living?

Do you know what your values are?  Have you given that any thought?

I’m going through this exercise rather slowly.  I have my main values written down.  These are my core values that are most important to me.  I have a couple I think are and I’m slowly deciding if I really believe them.

In other words, I am deciding what my subject, ME, believes, VERB.

How about you?  Do you know what you believe?  Does it match with what you do?

I like this thought process and I will be thinking on this more. Thanks!

Larry, Great post! I want these to match up and I think they do for me most of the time. But if I’m honest, I don’t always get it right. I appreciate the challenge to think about it in a new way thanks to your post.

I try to make sure I match. Not always successful though. Thanks for the challenge Larry.

I know that at some point I wouldn’t have thought about it. Part of the battle is being aware of it.

I hope so. It doesn’t always but I try. Thank God for grace.

The great thing, Rob, is that without Him and His grace, it isn’t even possible. He makes it possible.

The grammar nerd in me loves this post. The theologian in me loves it even more.

    Great stuff, friend.

Good thought today. Kinda profound even. Definitely something to ponder. I like it.

If, in grammar, the subject and verb don’t agree, is the sentence a hypocrit?

I love it, especially as I think about the declaration in John 1 that Jesus is the Word, and therefore the founder and initiator of language. I’ll be thinking about this one for a long time!

I love this! It makes me think of the John 1 declaration as Jesus as the Word, and therefore the foundation and initiator of language. I’ll be thinking about this for a long time!

Missed this one the first time around, Larry. I love it. It’s taken some time in my life but the subject and verb are much closer together today. In my 20′s this wasn’t the case at all. I struggle for along time to hold to what is important.

I think we all miss it for parts of our lives. We just have to keep persevering.

Great post! My verbs usually lag behind my nouns, but God eventually makes them get into the sentence.
