Are You All In?

I heard about some people who recently visited a church. It was the one and only time that they went to this church.

Why?

Because the sermon was about money. You see, the pastor knew they were coming to his church that Sunday. He scrapped what he had been planning on preaching that Sunday so that he could target them. He knew that they needed to hear that sermon on tithing. Since the pastor purposely did this, they decided not to visit that church again since he talks about money so much.

I may have exaggerated a point or two there. Yes, a couple visited a church. Yes, the pastor preached on money and tithing. No, they aren’t going back. That’s really all I know.

If they aren’t going back, I think they may have missed the point. Perhaps the pastor missed the point, too. Why not? Many, if not most of us, miss the point.

Money and tithing in the Bible is not about giving 10% or some other percentage.  It’s about our all of our money belonging to God.

The point is 10% is not enough.

The point is that most of us are not all in.

We don’t think of all of our money belonging to God.

We don’t consider that our houses, cars, jobs and everything else are His.

What difference does that simple adjustment make?

It will affect your spending choices.

It will affect your saving decisions.

It will affect your debt ceiling.

It will affect your life.

God doesn’t want our money.  He has all of the money He needs.  What He wants is for us to be all in.  He wants all of us.

Are you all in?

    Hi Larry,
It sounds like your couple are jaded like so many other people in our pagan world. I’ve been guilty of this in a lot of instances being outwardly focused, either worried about keeping up with the Joneses or ‘having my best life now.’ Robianity or Americanity instead of Christianity.

I like how your question of being all in implies a gamble.

It is not money God wants, it is your total devotion and love. In return He gives you His total devotion and love. I often wonder why everyone can’t see that.

Walk daily with God at your side!

our pastor talks alot about tithing…i think a lot of people tune him out…sad to say sometimes i do too…i think it’s just human nature to think that your money that you worked so hard for is thrown into a fake gold plate…
even though we pray and know that with out God we can do nothing…

Great post today. We tend to worry so much about the 10% that we are “giving” to Him that we forget the other 90% belongs to Him as well. He has given it to us. We all need this reminder from time to time.

Something powerful always happens when we “decide” and we’re “all in.”

    Larry,

I totally agree with you. God does not want or need our money, He wants our life and heart. I think giving is sometimes a sacrifice and God wants to see if we are willing to give up something so many people place a high value on. Great post.
