Why Submission Is Good For You

If you haven’t noticed by now, the life that follows Christ is one of paradox.  It rarely goes the way we would make it if we were in charge.  We would have Christ land in a palace not a stable.  We would have created Israel out of a young man, not one a century old.  We would not have anointed a shepherd boy king and then left him in the king’s employ.

We would have created extremely strong leaders who rules everyone.  We would have not have told all of Christ’s followers to submit to each other.

Submission tends to be a dirty word in today’s world.  Women don’t like when they are told to submit to their husbands.  Slaves are not thrilled with submitting to masters.  We all want a Messiah who rides the white horse to victory over the oppressor, whoever that is in our lives.

What we really want is to change places with them.  We want to rule.  We want Jesus to tell us who the greatest among us are.  We want our children to sit at his right hand in heaven.  We don’t want to decrease as He increases.

The kingdom is one that is upside-down in our right-side up world.

So, Paul tells us to submit to each other, instead of seeking to rule.  He shows us that we should wash each other’s feet instead of having our own feet washed.

Wives submit to their husbands, instead of their desire being for their husband.  Husbands love their wives as Christ loved the Church, rather than ruling their wives.

Submission is a picture.  A picture of creation being restored to what it was as God created it before sin entered the world.

Submission is a witness to the life that Christ brings us through His life and death, His sacrifice, His redemption of our lives, our rescue.

What is submission good for?

It is good for us to know God through Christ in a way that no one could anticipate.

How is submission working in your life?

I believe mutual submission is the word for this topic. It was never meant to be a bludgeoning word. Nor a “do this if you love me” word. i also tell the church I submit to them and they submit to me because we are to all submit to each other. (Eph.5:21). Glad you wrote this Larry.

Thanks Bill. If we in the church could just get this one down……

Our whole life in Christ is build on submission. Jesus submitted to the plan to reconcile us to the Father. We either submit to His will in our life or stay in a constant struggle and have no peace. Very good post brother…Bill is right it is a precious word if we put God’s love for us in the middle of it.
