Are You Showing Up?

In 1973, a four-year old boy began kindergarten.  The elementary school he was zoned for was overcrowded.  He rode the school bus to that school, boarded another bus and traveled across town.  In October, he finally turned five.

That was me.  That was also the only year of school that I had perfect attendance.

A young man who goes to school with my son has never missed a day of school.  So far, that’s ten years of school.  Through sickness and football and whatever else, nothing has kept him from going to school.

They are sophomores in high school now, and there is no sign that he will miss anytime soon.

Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s streak of consecutive games played in 1995.  He ended his streak in 1998 voluntarily.  He ended up playing 2,632 consecutive games over a twenty-one year career.

Does anyone want to bet that no one breaks that no one breaks that record?  I feel pretty comfortable it won’t happen.

A young man not missing a day of kindergarten is incredible.  Kids get sick.

A young man not missing a day of school well into high school is amazing.  Imagine going to eleven years of school without being sick enough to miss.

A man playing baseball for 17 years without being injured or just taking a game off is incredible.  How many of us do that in jobs that do not require the physical nature of baseball?

How about in our spiritual lives?  What about our relationship with God?

Do we show up everyday?  In a year?  A decade?  A span?

I’m not talking about feeling obligated to meet with Him in drudgery.  I mean getting up excited to meet Him everyday.  Meeting Him in His word and in prayer.  Meeting Him throughout the day in everything you encounter.

We tell people all the time that half the battle is showing up.  That’s the question isn’t it?

Are you showing up?

Sometimes all I do is show up. Becoming engaged is the real problem.

There are definitely seasons where I don’t show up. I’m thankful that this season isn’t one of them.

It’s crazy how seasons change and some are easy, while others are difficult.

These day–most of the time. But there have been plenty of other days.
