Is God Good When Things Are Bad?

A mother nears her delivery date.  Within just a few days, she and her husband will be parents and the pain of miscarriage will be replaced with the joy of a new life joining their family.  She notices something is wrong and rushes to the doctor.  The look of anguish on the doctor’s face says it all.  The baby was lost just before it was set to com into the world.

A child is born and almost immediately it is discovered that something is wrong.  Soon they realize that the child has Down’s Syndrome.  A lifetime of hardship awaits them, parents and child alike.

The young man wakes up just like normal.  Except, soon, the day is anything but normal.  A sickness has entered the family.  It affects each family member in ways that are difficult to describe.  His teenage years are not like anyone else’s.  He strives to keep what is going on in his life a secret.  He is one person at home, another at school, church or anywhere else in public.

Three terrible circumstances.  Three events that affect mothers, fathers and children.  And questions.  Or a question.

Is God good when things are bad?

Is He?

The circumstances aren’t good.  None of us would ever say that.  None of us could.  They are hard.  They hurt.  We struggle.

Then we are told that all things work together for the good of those who love Him, those who are called according to His purpose.

We wonder how they could ever work together for our good.  How can losing a child work for our good?  A challenged child?  Losing what was wonderful about a parent?

His son waited.  He knew it was coming.  He prayed.  And prayed.  And prayed.

They came and hauled him to court.  He was charged with some trumped-up accusations.  His beard was plucked and He was beaten.  Before He carried His cross to His own execution.

He cried out on that cross.  Finally, it became dark.  He was dead.

Things were bad.  Thinks were rough.  There was no hope.  He had not spared His own Son.  He was murdered and He turned His back on Him.

Some had to wonder where God was.  Was He still good?

Three days later, Christ rose.  The Father had worked out for good for all who love Him.

God is good when things are bad.

Is God good when things are bad?

You are asking the age old question my friend. My answer is yes, even when i don’t see it or understand it. I don’t even have to accept it, at least not right away. But in time i will see-if not here on earth then in heaven. Until then, I have to trust.

yes…but it’s not an emphatic YES because it’s a question I wrestle with. At the end I always see how God is good.

    God is always good.

Sometimes our definition of bad is screwed up.

Yes. Unequivocally yes. On the 24th when Jack was so near death, I knew I might lose him. I knew that I might go home alone, that I might soon have to figure out how to pay bills alone, take out the garbage on my own, live alone, and life would never be the same.
I never once considered that God wasn’t good. I knew He was, and I asked for Him to let my husband live. At the same time, I asked for His will. I have never prayed anything so difficult.

God is always good. His plan for us is always good. We just don’t always understand what “good” is.
