The Temptation For Creatives

Many who read this blog are creatives.  So many of us fall into this category.  We seek out fellow creatives for inspiration.  Fellow creatives are always looking for new and better ways of doing things.

However, no matter what form our creativity takes, we face a temptation.  We face the temptation that it’s really all about us.

It doesn’t matter whether we are an author, singer, artist or blogger.  We can fall into the thought that what we create centers on us.

I believe that Satan was the choir director of heaven before he was kicked out of Heaven.  Don’t hold me to that, but there is some indication of that.  If so, then he was the minister of music for all of the angels.  He was the worship leader of the praise team.  Everything was supposed to be focused on God.  Something went wrong and he must have decided that he wanted a piece of the action.  Or demanded it.  He wanted to be like God and led a rebellion.One-third of the angels went with him.  The reward for such an act?

Banishment.

Look at what then happened with Adam and Eve.  Here God created the pinnacle of His creation.  He created and world and gave it to these two to populate to have dominion over.  Who got to name all of what God created?  Adam, with his help mate.

What did the serpent tell Eve?  That if she ate the fruit, she would be like God.

He still tempts us with this.  It isn’t hard for us to think and believe how great and wonderful we are when we create.

We lead our congregations to the heights of worship and we face the temptation of grabbing the glory for ourselves.

We paint, sculpt or draw and want to be known for what we have created.

We write incredible stories, articles or books with an aim to impact people’s lives.  We want the accolades that come with it.

In a sense, our temptation is to want to be God.

It’s a temptation we will face over and over again.  We will continually face the same temptation of Eve if we continue to create.

Where do we turn?

We turn to Christ.  We keep our focus on Him.  If we take our eyes off, we turn them back.  Simple, but not easy.

We all face this temptation, because we are all creative in some way.  The key is to know when we are being tempted and to cling to the One that can bring us through it.

Do you ever face this temptation?

It is a weekly temptation for me Larry. Every time I hear “well done” or “thank you pastor” it is a temptation to pat myself on the back. Well said today my friend.

Thanks Bill. It’s extremely easy, isn’t it?
