The Truth Of Parables

I’ve mentioned them before.  They arrive every month or so.  They pull into my driveway and attempt to engage me in conversation.  Sometimes, depending on my circumstances, I am more accommodating than other times.

They know what they’re doing.  They have a plan.  They want dialogue.  They want to ask questions and for you to answer, so that they can prove you wrong and change your mind.  At least that has been my experience.

Of course, I’m talking about the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

One of the things they don’t believe in is a resurrection like the one we who follow Christ do.  They will refute this.  Let’s say that you refer to scripture, perhaps Luke 16 and the story of the rich man and Lazarus.  How do they refute your reference of this?

It’s just a parable.

Your visitors believe, based on that response, that parables are not true or did not happen.  They are just stories made up to prove a spiritual point.

Do you know what they don’t like to hear following that?

They don’t like to hear someone say, “If the parable is not true, which of the others parts of the Bible are?”

They might stumble and bumble a bit.  They may get defensive.  They may have a prepared answer.

However, I don’t really believe they can adequately answer this question.

Here’s the thing I believe.  I believe the Bible is true.  All of it.

Because the source of the Bible does more than simply tell the truth.  He is the Truth.  No falsehood lies within Him.

Why would the God of the universe have need to make up stories simply to prove points?  That makes no sense to me.

So, if shepherd had one hundred sheep and one got lost, I believe that happened.

If  a woman had ten coins and lost one, she turned her house upside down and swept it looking for that coin.

A father had two sons, one of which lost his mind while living the high life, but came back to a welcoming father.

And there were two men, one rich and one named Lazarus.  They died.  The rich one had gotten his reward here on earth.  Lazarus got his in the next life.

I believe it’s true.

I believe that parables are true.

Do you?
