Why I Haven’t Watched Game Of Thrones (Yet)

Unless you have been living on the moon, under a rock like Patrick Star or ,have no knowledge at all of popular culture, you know that one of the most popular television shows currently taking place is Game of Thrones.  It is based on George R. R. Martin’s novel series, A Song Of Ice And Fire, the first of which was A Game Of Thrones.

I was a little late to the party of reading the novels.  I began reading them a couple of years ago, although Martin began the series in 1996.  I just completed the third novel, A Storm Of Swords.  I’ll take up the fourth one, A Feast For Crows, in a few months.

I have not watched the TV shows.  I don’t have plans to do so anytime soon, though I will watch them at some point in the future.  I love the novels, so why am I waiting to watch them?

It’s not the violence.  The times the novels are set in are violent.  Depicting them honestly has to be done in an extremely violent manner.

It’s not the sex.  I’m not crazy about that part, but I know it’s part of the story.

It’s not because of my faith.  I know plenty of others I share my faith with who watch it, including a few preachers.  I know others who don’t.  I totally understand both positions.  I believe it’s a matter of conscience to watch this particular show.

There is one main reason why I haven’t watched this show.  Yet.

My son.

Most of the TV shows that we watch in our house, we watch together.  My son is 15 years old and will be a junior in high school this year.  I don’t think he’s ready to watch this type of content yet.  He’s not too far off, but not quite yet.  I don’t really want to watch it and tell him that he can’t.

So, I wait.  I haven’t watched Game of Thrones.

Yet.

Have you ever purposely delayed doing something for the benefit of another?

I’ve heard great things about this too. I’ve yet to watch it or read the books. Just so many others things to do right now. One day, I’m sure, I’ll catch it on Netflix. I like being able to record shows and watch them later. I have to do that for the benefit of my son too.

So sweet that you’ll be watching it with your son. I think I was ready at 15 for this (nobody gives girls porn, anyway!), but I give you serious props for waiting to watch it with your kid.
