5 Ways To Shake Up Your Spiritual Life

I’ve been a Christian for about twenty years now.   However, I’ve actively been trying to follow Christ for a lot less than those twenty.  With each passing year, it seems like I’ve been trying to do that even less than the previous year.

The thing about our spiritual lives is that it is easy to become stagnant.  It’s easy to get in a rut.  Sometimes we need to shake things up.  Here are five ways we can do this:

  1. Read a commentary.  A basic staple of our spiritual lives is to read the Bible.  But, let’s face it, it can get tough hitting some areas like Leviticus and all of the begats.  Even some of the books of the Bible that we have read all of our lives can be tough.  A commentary can be help smooth out some rough edges.  The other day I was walking through a campground and found a man reading one.  He was getting his scripture and help in knowing what’s going on.  Ask your pastor for a recommendation.
  2. Listen to audio.  Some folks love to read.  Some hate it.  Regardless, a great way to get a new perspective on scripture is to listen to it.  There are plenty of audio Bibles out there.  Every translation can be found in some audio form.  Try it and you may pick up on something that you never have.
  3. Read a classic.  There are plenty of classics around that can be found.  Pilgrim’s Progress is one.  You can read the sermons of Jonathon Edwards.  I know.  I know.  You had to read Sinners In The Hand Of An Angry God in high school and hated it.  Me too.  But I’ve learned to love it since.  Read some C.S. Lewis.  Don’t just read the latest and greatest.  Read something old.
  4. Get out of your comfort zone.  It’s easy to get trapped in the maze found in the four walls of church.  Guess what?  You need to get out.  Go feed the homeless.  Serve in a crisis pregnancy center.  Spend a day in a drug recovery center.   Do something that you normally wouldn’t do.
  5. Go to another culture.  This may mean going on a mission trip.  Or it could mean simply finding an area of your own town.  There is one specific area of my county that is exploding with Hispanic growth.  Along with it are Hispanic churches.  Maybe you could talk to your pastor about your church teaming up with a church.  Maybe you can think of another way.

Those are just a few ideas.  There are numerous others.  Perhaps you can think of others.

What ideas do you have to shake up your spiritual life?

Nothing to add really other than go on a vacation. 🙂

Those are all great. Andy Stanley has a great series called 5 Things God Uses To Grow Your Faith. It has some of the same things you listed.

Good suggestions Larry. I try and read books by theologically diverse authors. (both books and blogs). This helps me stretch and test my own assumptions.

Occasionally read an article or blog post or something from someone you disagree with. This will sharpen your thinking on what you actually believe and why.
