What If You Find Yourself In A Bad Church?

Thankfully, I’m not there.  In a bad church, that is.  I have been and not all that long ago.  In fact, I was in a bad church for years.  Many others around the world find themselves in this situation as well.  Here are your options if you find yourself in these circumstances.

Stay

You can resolve to stay.  Pray about it, of course.  Determine to be part of the solution instead of the problem.

Do nothing to cause strife in the church.  Pray for the leadership.  Beg the Lord to change it.

Anticipate that you will find yourself at odds with others and, possibly, your pastor.  Realize that you may not have much influence to affect change.  Do all you can to maintain relationships without compromising.

Do whatever you can to make things better.

Leave

Get out of dodge.  Pray about it, of course.  Realize that there may not be a solution

Leave well.  Don’t make a scene going out the door.  You probably still have friends there.  Bet the Lord to change things for them.

Anticipate that many will not understand what happened.  There will be plenty of rumors.  Don’t gossip.  Things in your community may be uncomfortable for a while.  You will feel pain for some time.

Take your time looking for a new church.  You just went through a breakup.  Take things slow.  Then when you do find a church, love it.

No one ever thinks something like this will ever happen.  No one anticipates finding themselves in a bad situation.  It can happen.  Either option you find yourself considering, take it slow.  Seek the Lord throughout it all.

Have you ever found yourself in a bad church situation?  What did you do?

Since I am a pastor the answer is Yes. And I have left both well and not so well. Leaving well is much preferred.

I don’t think I’ve ever been in a truly bad church situation. I’ve been in some dramatic situations, but overall I’ve had a great church upbringing.
