New Thoughts On Festivus

Today is Festivus and today marks the annual Festivus post.  Of course, Festivus is a fictional holiday created during the heyday of Seinfeld.  You can check it out for yourself if you need more history on it.

My friend, David, and I usually get together for lunch and celebrate together.  The only things we don’t have is an aluminum Festivus pole to commemorate the event, but we may some day.

Festivus is a bit of a joke for us, a bit of levity during the stress of the Christmas season.  However, I had some thoughts about it this year.

Airing of Grievances

One thing that marks Festivus is the traditional airing of grievances.  This actually doesn’t sound much different from any other day.  We certainly, as a species, love to complain.

We who follow Christ should strive to be different.  We should do all things without grumbling or complaining.  What if we spent more time airing all of the good things that happen in our life?

Feats of Strength

George Constanza’s dad wanted to compete in a wrestling as a feat of strength.  What if we turned this on its ear as well?

What if, instead, we took Joshua’s words to heart?  What if we strove to be strong and courageous to honor the Lord?  What difference would Festivus and Christmas be in our lives?

Festivus Miracle

The description of Festivus includes a Festivus miracle.  The problem is  that we have miracles in our lives daily.  Living itself is a miracle.  We take our lives for granted.  Let’s open our eyes to the miracles the Lord allows into our lives and celebrate them daily, not just one day a year.

Yes, Festivus is a joke.  We don’t have movies, though we have one TV episode that highlights it.  Let’s use it to drive us close the Lord, even though it has nothing inherently to do with our faith or the Christmas season we celebrate.

Do you give any thought to Festivus?

Not until I see you post about. Then I laugh and remember how brilliant Seinfeld is.

A few years back, Ben and Jerry’s had a Festivus ice cream flavor.
