What Does It Mean To Do Unto Others?

Have you ever tried to apply the Golden Rule?

I was having a meeting with my team the other day and asked a question about customer service. I didn’t expect to get the answer I was looking for so I had a story to tell for an example.

The story was from a podcast I had listened to. A man was asked what his philosophy of customer service was. His response?

In his Tennessee country drawl, he said that it was doing unto others as he would do unto them. Treat people the way he wanted to be treated.

We spout the Golden Rule often in life, probably for most of our lives. Yet, I think we rarely think of ways to really apply this in our lives.

The answer I received from my team member was to treat others like you wanted to be treated. The answer almost ended my meeting before it really started.

How do we want to be treated?

We want others to be tesponsive to our needs. We others to go above and beyond.

Another way to say it? Love your neighbor as yourself.

Customer service is actually pretty simple. Unfortunately, it is difficult for some of us to execute. It’s an attitude and action, not a job.

It’s treating people the right way. And just Snickers, it satisfies.

Do you find it difficult to treat others the way you want to be treated?
