How Do You Celebrate Festivus?
Today is Festivus.
If you don’t know what Festivus is, it’s the holiday for the rest of us popularized by the Seinfeld episode The Gift. It’s mainly a made up holiday that no one takes seriously.
The tenets of the holiday are the following: 1) Airing of Grievances 2) Feats of Strength and 3) the Festivus miracle.
My friend, David, and jokingly get together each year to eat lunch on Festivus. It’s a tradition that we use to get together and have some fun at Christmas. But what should we really do with Festivus as brothers in Christ?
First, we should “do all things without grumbling or disputing.” The airing of grievances really has no place in the believer’s life.
Next, “be strong and courageous.” This is the greatest feat of strength that we could perform on a daily basis.
Finally, God is in charge of miracles. It’s up to Him when they happen. They could happen on Festivus or any day that the Lord chooses.
So, celebrate Festivus, but redeem it for the Lord. Don’t follow in the footsteps of Frank Costanza. Follow the Lord instead.
