Christmas Eve

December 24, 2015 2 comments

Christmas Eve may be my favorite day of the year. All of the anticipation of the season comes to a head on the day before Christmas.

Our family will spend some time partaking in some traditions that we have spent the years building. It’s wonderful.

What do you like about Christmas Eve?

I hope that you are spending time with family rather than reading blog posts.  In the event you are, I wrote this back in October.  Shut it down and get busy with Christmas stuff.  Love you all.

Communion and Community

January 7, 2013 2 comments

We did something different this year on Christmas Eve.

In years past, we have visited my parents and my sister and had our Christmas with them on Christmas Eve.  This year we did that on the Sunday before Christmas.

On Christmas Eve, we were just kind of lazy and enjoyed the day.  My son had football workouts that morning because improvement doesn’t take a holiday.  You can quote me on that one if you want to.

Then we capped it off with something we have never done.

We went to our church and did what is called “From the Cradle to the Cross.”

From about 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. anyone could go at their convenience and take communion.  If you’re Baptist like me, you could have the Lord’s Supper.

It was a really neat time to sit and reflect with my family on the fact that Christmas is about a baby who grew up to sacrifice Himself so that our sins would be paid and we would have eternal life.  And a lot more is wrapped up in all of that, but I don’t try to get too theological in these posts.

So, when I say what I’m about to say, I don’t want it to sound critical.  I really enjoyed taking the bread and the juice.  I really did.

But not as much as I could have.

Here’s the deal.  I used a word earlier.  It’s a word that I always thought was strange.  I  didn’t like using it.  Why?  Because I was a Baptist and Baptists weren’t supposed to like this word.  At least they weren’t supposed to in my mind.

Communion.

Sure, I was able to share this experience with my family, but I was not able to share it with the larger church family.

Communion ties into my One Word for last year.  Communion is something that is meant to be done in community with your brothers and sisters.  It is community coming together or a common union.

So, I did enjoy sharing that with my wife and kids.  But I look forward to it even more with my church family.

I look forward to communion with them.

Do you think about community when you take communion?

The Christmas Eve Roundup

December 24, 2011 Leave a comment

Welcome to the Christmas Eve edition of The Weekly Roundup.  While I love to have readers and comments on my posts, I have mixed feelings today.  In a sense, I hope you’re too busy with Christmas and family activity to read my blog today.  Then again, you may have some extra time while you’re hanging around.  So, let’s get on with it.

The most viewed post of mine from the last week was My 10 Favorite Rock/Pop Christmas Songs.  This would be fantastic, but I didn’t post this one this week.  This one was posted back almost two weeks ago.  It has climbed steadily and is now one of the post popular posts I have ever written.

Coming in right behind it was one that I actually wrote this week, Christmas Cynics.

Next up, 140 Words (More or Less) About The Three Wise Men.

Do You Have A Wonderful Life? generated some comments.

Christmas Fears and Happy Festivus! did ok.

The post I was most disappointed in this week was possibly my favorite.  Is There Any Christmas In Your Carol? did not do well at all.  I’m not sure what happened with this one.

What’s happening over the next week here at Deuceology?

Merry Christmas tomorrow.

Anyone can have a Top 10 list.  I’m going to share the 10 least viewed posts of the year on Monday.

Tuesday will bring what I learned through blogging this year.

On Wednesday, I’m going to share 5 questions I’m going to ask myself a lot in 2012.

Twitterfic Thursday will bring 140 Words about my goals for 2012.

Friday, I will share some more random thoughts.

Saturday, I will do a Yearly roundup.  Here is where you will see my top 10 posts of the year.

Is There Any Christmas In Your Carol?

How many versions of A Christmas Carol have you seen?

I’ve seen the old black and white version from back from the 30’s.

I’ve seen the one from the 50’s.

I’ve seen the one starring Mr. Magoo.

George C. Scott even started in one in the 80’s.

When I was in college, I went to see Scrooged.

Finally, a couple of weeks ago I saw the new Disney version featuring Jim Carrey’s voice.

This new version may be my favorite that I’ve seen so far.  It was fast paced and, of course, the special effects were great.  However, there was one thing about that I liked best and stood out to me more than any other time.

What A Christmas Carol is really all about is a redemption story.  Scrooge changes at the end.  On Christmas Eve, he is the Bah Humbug Scrooge.  On Christmas Day, he is the New Scrooge.  Or, as the movie implies, the Renewed Scrooge.  There is one thing that marks the change in his life that stands out more to me in this new version than any other I have seen.

Joy.

Scrooge is enthralled with the joy of Christmas after the visits by the three Ghosts on Christmas Eve.

You can see it.  He embraces the joy of Christmas in everything he does that day.

It reminds me that Christmas is about joy.  It reminds me that the ultimate joy that we receive at Christmas, and in life in general, is through Christ.

How about you?

Is your life full of joy this Christmas?

Is your life full of joy?

Is there any Christmas in your carol?
